Disney College Program Series: The First Week

We’ve made it through our first week of the Disney College Program. I know a lot of people are wondering what we’ve been doing in that week and others might be wondering what they can expect in their own program. So I’ve got a break down of our first week.

Day 1

On Day 1, we arrived at our assigned apartment complex. Our assigned time was 9:15 am. You check in with security and then follow the check-in signs to the building where they do your check in. You get your picture taken and receive your Housing ID, your Program Guide and the key to your apartment.
We headed to our apartment building and found out we were on the top floor. (ugh) There are 3 floors and we are on floor #3. It was A LOT of stair climbing to unload our 2 cars. Fortunately we had totes and baskets to help minimize the number of trips, but still. It was rough. And it was TOASTY out that day too. We got everything unloaded from our cars and started putting some things away.
That afternoon, Adam had to go to Casting to get his background check done and have his picture taken for his employee ID (although you do not get your Employee ID immediately…more to come on that).

How cute are these statues inside Casting?
We finished off Day 1 with a Walmart and Target trip. We had to stock up on, well, everything. Eating is important. And we plan on doing a lot of cooking at home so we can actually put some money in our savings while we work.

Day 2

I wish I could tell you that we were 100% moved in on the first day, but the truth is, we were not. We were probably 75% though. Sometimes you just need to spend some time in the space before you can figure out where everything goes. So Day 2 was us settling in some more and doing a Costco run (because our Costco is about a 25 minute drive from us and there were things on coupon that we needed).
Also, Day 2 was when I went to Casting to do my stuff. Everything is scheduled out at very specific times, so it’s not like I could have just gone with Adam because that’s not what my schedule said.

Day 3

Neither of us had any events scheduled on Day 3. We are Disney World Annual Passholders, so we decided to go into the parks for a little bit. Most CP’s don’t get to do this until after they receive their employee ID because that’s what gets you into the park for free.
So we spent the afternoon in the Magic Kingdom exploring the Incredible Tomorrowland Expo. You can find our video of that here

Day 4

We started Day 4 with a Housing Welcome Session. This took place in The Commons Clubroom. It was about and hour long and just kind of explained some of the rules and amenities in our housing complexes.
That was it for that day. Disney really likes to spread things out. I guess it’s nice because you have time to get settled in and adjusted to the area. But I was anxious to get to training and working.

Day 5 and 6

Adam got to go to his Traditions class on Day 5 and I went on Day 6! Traditions is basically your Disney orientation. You get to hear a lot about the company and the history, which is so great and emotional if you’ve been dreaming of working for Disney your whole life (I may have teared up…which is a rare occurrence for me).
Traditions is held at Disney University!
This is also where you get your name tag and Employee ID. There are some other really exciting moments and you can find videos of those if you want. But they were so magical, I don’t want to be the one to spoil them. I will tell you to make sure you wear shoes you’re comfortable walking in!

No joke, looking at this makes me tear up. I’ve wanted one of these so badly!

 Day 7

We got to go to our first day of training on our 7th day. This training was also at Disney University. For me, it was just 5 hours, including an hour to go get my costume. For Adam, he was there for an extra hour and a half and he didn’t get his costume that day. This was more HR type stuff. Lift with your legs, not your back. Don’t be mean to guests. How to use a Fire Extinguisher. It was done in a very Disney way, but it wasn’t focused role-related training.
We are so excited to join the Walt Disney World family and start creating magical memories at the parks! Our next few days of training should be more focused on our actual roles and responsibilities and we can’t wait!

Happy Infinity War Day!! (Don’t worry, no spoilers)

Today is Avengers: Infinity War Day!!! Wendi and I are huge MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) fans, and we’ve been waiting for ten years to have this movie come out. We own all of the other ones and watch them on a regular basis.

So, what makes these movies so enticing? We love the concepts of heroes. Their origin stories, how they get put in the positions they are put in, and the sacrifices they make along the way. I have been a huge superhero fan for quite some time. Anyone that knows me knows that I wear superhero or video game t-shirts 90% of the time. For me it started with cartoons a long time ago. I grew up watching Spider-Man, X-Men, and Batman. Then came even more favorites, like Batman Beyond, Justice League, Young Justice, etc. In the animated world, DC reigns supreme, but Marvel live-action movies are so great with their storytelling and characters, which has drawn us in.

What amazes me is the filmmakers’ ability to have a bigger picture and weave the movies into one another. Seeing the first Avengers movie a few years ago was mind-blowing to me. I loved seeing all of the heroes coming together and using their powers to fight such a giant evil presence. I especially loved the scene when they pan across all of the heroes kicking butt throughout the city in a single shot.

The MCU does a great job at creating characters that you can relate to. Wendi and her friend Amy watch Marvel movies together from opposite ends of the country all the time and I know they view the characters like they’re family or friends. Because you get to see these characters across multiple movies, you get to know them even better. Leading up to the movie, Wendi has been legitimately concerned for what may happen to her friends in Infinity War. The stress has been real.

For me, the love of superheroes reminds me to not take life too seriously. I feel like I’m a part of a community where everyone can share their passion for the fandom. I’m also living proof that you can be Team Marvel and Team DC simultaneously! Seriously folks, check out some DC cartoon series and movies.

Who else out there loves superhero movies?? And why? Please let us know your thoughts, and if you have a favorite superhero! (Mine is The Flash, in case you didn’t already know. Wendi’s is Captain America.)

Adventures Don’t Always go as Planned

From time to time our posts might be of a more personal nature. I guess you should connect with us if you’re going to keep reading our blog. And maybe knowing parts of our adventure can help you on your own.

April 22-28th, 2018 is National Infertility Awareness week. Did you know Infertility effects 1 in 8 couples?  That makes the odds pretty good that you know someone who feels the pain of infertility. In fact, if you’re reading this, I can guarantee you do.

I don’t want to spend time going into specifics. But I do want to explain how this has been part of our journey and how it has changed what we thought our adventure would be.

When we first got married 4 1/2 years ago, we had plans similar to so many couples. We thought we would start a family pretty soon (we were older when we got married and some things have expiration dates). We imagined teaching our kids playing piano and taking them to Disney and talking to them about our favorite musicals and showing them how to bake cookies.

But sometimes you end up on a completely different adventure. Realizing that having children wasn’t going to be part of our future, we made new plans. I decided it was time to go back and get the degree I had always wanted. Not that I didn’t learn a lot getting my History degree, but my heart always pulled me back to music. So with Adam’s support and encouragement, I auditioned and was accepted into the Vocal Performance program at the University of Utah. A year later, Adam joined me as he pursued his Masters degree in Vocal Performance.

We’ll both be graduating in just under 2 weeks. We’ve worked so hard and come so far. There were many times where we felt that we wouldn’t make it through the program. There were so many disappointments and feelings of failure. There were so many nay-sayers and those who tried to make us fail. But we helped each other through the hard times and enjoyed the good. And we forged our own path around all of the obstacles placed in our way.

We’re so excited to be participating in the Disney College Program after graduation. Disney is one of our passions. Our hope is that we can combine a few of our passions and turn them into our careers.

Yes, we get to travel just the two of us. Yes, we get to go out and not worry about a babysitter. Sure we can stay up late and sleep in because no one else is here to wake us up. And yes, we have decided to embrace our adventure and try to have a positive outlook. But sometimes it’s hard. Because when we travel, we travel just the two of us. When we go out, we don’t have to worry about a babysitter. We sleep late because no one woke us up asking to fix them breakfast. And our adventure isn’t what we thought it would be.

Ultimately, all any of us can do is to try to find the best in our adventures, whatever they may be. And we can try to help others along their adventures. We can encourage and give hope. We can support and teach. We can empathize and be sensitive.

Hopefully this has given you a different perspective on infertility and those it effects. This week, during National Infertility Awareness Week try to exercise a little more awareness of those around you who might not be on the adventure they planned, but are still making the best of it anyway.

Adventure is Out There

I’ve(Wendi) been in school for the last 3 years and Adam for the last 2 years. When we graduate on May 4th, we will each hold 2 degrees. (Side Note: you’ll definitely want to come back for our May the 4th Graduation post) We are SO DONE WITH SCHOOL! And we are so ready to move on to our next Adventure…

We are both so over-the-moon excited to be joining the ranks of cheerful cast members at Disney World as part of the Disney College Program (DCP for short). Working for The Mouse has been a dream of mine for a long time and fortunately for me, Adam feels the same way.

I will be working as a PhotoPass Photographer and Adam will be working in Merchandise. When we report on June 4th, we’ll receive specific location assignments. Our internships will last until January. Afterwards, we’re hoping to find more permanent positions with the company.

We’ve had a lot of friends complete this program and we’re excited for our own unique version of the adventure. Things will be a little different for us because we’re married. There’s a lot of information out there at DCP in general and DCP for single college students. But finding info about Married Housing or a Married DCP experience is just next to impossible. Hopefully, we’ll be able to share a bit more insight as we go through the program and shed some light for future married hopefuls!

Right now, we’re finishing up our final semester and working on packing and preparing for the move across the country! Stay tuned for regular updates on our current adventures and our preparations for the future.

Adventure is Out There! Join us for the ride!
